Kamehameha Schools Maui (KSM) is one of three K-12 campuses that comprise the Kamehameha Schools Educational System. With over 6,900 students across three islands, Kamehameha Schools is focused on the education of Hawaiian students throughout the state. There are around 1,100 K-12 students at KSM, which is located on a beautiful 180-acre campus on Maui.
Since 2019, we have been working with Kamehameha Schools Maui to create unique studio experiences with a focus on Hawaiian culture.
Through STEM-based studio courses and cross-disciplinary collaborations at the high school level, NuVu and KS are working to create new experiences for students that merge design and technology skills, community-based learning, and different elements of Hawaiian culture.
Students have participated in studios that address a range of topics, including ecology, sustainability, identity, architecture, and community building. Currently, in a studio called Living Architecture, students are envisioning and prototyping responsive architectural experiences that promote well being by strengthening connections between people, technology, and environment. In the spring of 2021, students will explore the intersection of future food systems and entrepreneurship in a collaboratively-taught studio.
Thus far, we have worked with nearly 100 high school students and had over 35 teachers participate in professional development workshops.
