The Wheeler School

Creating a Semester-Long Immersive Studio Term for Upper School Students

The Wheeler School

Providence, RI, USA

Founded in 1889 by Mary Colman Wheeler, The Wheeler School is an independent N-12 day school in Providence, Rhode Island that enrolls around 900 students each year.

Challenge

Together, Wheeler and NuVu are working to create fully-immersive NuVuX Studio Terms for Wheeler Upper School Students each semester.

Outcome + Impact

NuVu has been working with Wheeler since Fall 2019, and in that time has experimented with a number of different ways to implement NuVuX at the high school level, including individual courses, a fully immersive Studio Term, specialized advanced projects through Wheeler’s Aerie program, and a Design Club. The goal is for students to be able to opt into a full time Studio Term at some point during their high school careers.

In the fall 2019 Sophomore Studio, students grappled with the future effects of climate change, and designed high-tech wearables to protect humans from the extreme conditions in that future. In spring 2020, during their fully immersive studio term, 11th and 12th graders partnered with the Nursery school to co-design developmentally appropriate, deployable play structures, and used virtual reality design software to model and create their own, futuristic virtual worlds.
